After reading this article, you might wonder how we can fix the issue. Here’s the start of a conversation about the industrialization of farm animals and the alternatives.

FRIEND: Being a former beef cattle farmer, wondering what the plan is for all the cattle, buffalo, rhinos, and other big-pooper-type animals? Kill them all and let them rot? Cause those cows have feelings and personalities too!! And what about horses?? Not picking at you, but just wondering at the logistics with this? Just saying…

ME: Stop breeding them and in a single generation of their species all populations will be back to how nature intended. 23 million animals a day are killed for our industrialized food production, though horses/buffalo/rhinos are not on that list.

FRIEND: You can stop breeding them (cows, chicken, pigs and so on), but what about those living? Maintain spending money on feeding the animals for about 15-25 years (their life span) without any income, working really hard in the meantime to provide hay, fencing, etc. and all that meat isn’t getting eaten? Going to re-program all the meat eaters? Should we just set them free to roam? Going to make the cattle people start growing more lettuce and legumes instead? Just presenting the other side. Seems like the real problem is too many people in the world, thus demand for food. Then there’s that regulating of populations issue. And people have been eating meat since the beginning of time.

ME: Thank you for showing me the other side and it’s important for me to understand it. We have always done a lot of things, and yet that doesn’t mean they are in our best interest going forward. Of course, the industrialization of food and the wholesale slaughter of animals is a very new thing. Factory farming is the intensive confinement of farmed animals and/or the colossal-scale breeding and slaughter of farmed animals raised for food and was invented by scientists in the 1960s.

So, have we really “since the beginning of time” been doing unto Earth and Her animals what we’ve been doing in the last 60 years? No, we have not. And, can we now find a better way?

THESE ARE ALL GREAT QUESTIONS THAT NEED ANSWERING.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas.
